The location of the deceased

For many of us to pass away in your own home is the preferred option. There will be family, friends and possibly a kind neighbour on hand to help. Depending on whether the death was expected or not, the first thing you must do is inform the family doctor that the death has occurred.

The doctor will need to write out the Medical Certificate of Death and it can take a few days for this to be issued. We are able to transfer your loved one once the death has been confirmed by the doctor.

If the death occurs in hospital or a care home you simply need to apply to them for the Medical Certificate of Death.

There are occasions when a death is reported to the Coroner by the police or a doctor. If this is the case then a Certificate will not be provided by the family doctor. It can happen just after the death or later if consultation is required with other medical professionals.

The Coroner’s duty is to establish the cause of death when a doctor is unable to issue a medical certificate. Procedures for registering the death differ when the Corner becomes involved.
